Social media best practices for authors

Platforms such as LinkedIn, Bluesky, X, Instagram and Facebook can generate interest in your book from those who know you best. If you’re trying to reach an academic audience, then specialist platforms like ResearchGate and ORCID can also be used.

Here are a few tried-and-tested methods to get you started:

Build your author profile
Create or update your LinkedIn and X accounts with a clear bio and photo. Make sure to include your book’s key topics in your profile description.

Post expert content
Try to keep direct book promotion to around 20% of your posts. Do this by posting insights from your field, creating short-form content highlighting key concepts and sharing relevant news and research.

Engage with the community
Comment on relevant discussions, use hashtags in your area of research, share speaking engagements and connect with fellow academics in your field to build a network of engaged potential readers.

Use visuals
Pique the interest of your followers by sharing photographs from any events you attend, creating quote cards featuring insights from your book, or posting screenshots of positive book reviews.

Stay consistent
Boost your engagement by posting consistently (2-3 times weekly), especially during academic terms, conferences, and relevant awareness events when your audience is most engaged.

Website promotion strategies

Do you have your own website? If so, then adding the cover image and blurb along with a link to the book’s product page is a simple way to convert interest in your work into sales of your book. You can download a web-ready .jpg of your cover from right clicking on it on the image on the product page on routledge.com.

Here’s examples of how our authors are using their website to promote their book:

Authors Jan Burkins and Kari Yates of Shifting the Balance feature their books for educators alongside free downloads on the homepage of thesixshifts.com.

This website dedicated to the book Port Economics Management and Policy supports discovery through search engines and is a great showcase for the authors Theo Notteboom, Athanasios Pallis, and Jean-Paul Rodrigue.

Jan Winhall leverages her recognition within the field of treating trauma and addiction to promote her book here.

Amazon author central page setup

We encourage authors to set up and maintain an Amazon Author Central page. A well-presented profile, complete with an author photo, biography, and links to your books, improves discoverability, builds credibility, and supports stronger sales performance on one of the world’s largest book marketplaces. Authors can also gain access to sales data and insight provided by NPD Bookscan.

You might also want to encourage anyone who has bought your book to give it the stars it deserves. Ratings and comments are important especially if the comments provide a balanced description of the benefits and solutions your book provides.

Personalized promotional materials

To support your individual marketing efforts, we provide custom banners, flyers, and email signature graphics featuring your book. These are ready to use across social media, event programs, newsletters, and personal websites, making it easy to spread the word consistently and professionally.  Typically, our banners & flyers contain a 20% discount code that is redeemable on routledge.com. However, if you would prefer the flyer to be created without a discount code. Please mention this in the comments section when you request your flyer.

Book launch support

Book launches can be a special moment in an author’s career, where you can celebrate your hard work with those who are interested in your subject area and eager to hear more about it. You may not immediately enjoy being the centre of attention but take comfort that you are not alone! Many authors feel the same starting out, so we have created this Book launch guide to provide advice and answer any questions.

Many authors will sell signed copies of their book at their launch party. If this is of interest our commercial team can help you order copies with your special author discount.

If you approach your local bookshop to organize your book launch, please let your Editor know. They will forward the details to our Sales team so they can assist if necessary.
