The publishing process
The Taylor & Francis publishing process: A step-by-step guide
We understand that writing a book is a big commitment. That’s why we are here to guide you through every stage of the publishing process. Whether you’re an experienced author or writing your first book, we offer clarity, support, and professional expertise every step of the way.
The seven stages of publishing a book
Step 1: Submit your book proposal
Visit our ‘submit your book proposal’ page for tips on crafting a proposal that stands out. Once submitted, one of our experienced commissioning editors will complete an internal assessment of your proposal, identifying its strengths and how well it fits within the subject list. They will also highlight open access options and answer any questions you may have.Step 2: Peer review
When your editor is ready to proceed, your book proposal will be sent out for an initial peer review, which can take up to 4-6 weeks. You will then discuss the reviewer feedback with your editor, making revisions and resubmitting the proposal if necessary.Step 3: Editorial process and board decision
Our internal editorial board will evaluate your revised proposal and recommend any necessary changes. They will make a final decision on approving your book for publication.Step 4: Sign your contract
Once your proposal is approved, the publishing agreement will be finalized. Your book contract will cover essential details like book length, royalties, copyright, and delivery dates.Step 5: Submit your manuscript
Focus on writing your manuscript. We’ll give you guidelines on permissions, formatting, and best practices to make sure that it’s ready to submit. When your manuscript is complete, send it to your editor for review. They will check that it aligns with professional standards, providing feedback as needed.Step 6: Production
A Production Editor will oversee the copyediting, typesetting, proofreading, indexing, and final cover design of your book. This process typically takes around 5-6 months. Watch our ‘what happens to my book during production?’ video for a behind-the-scenes look.Step 7: Publication and marketing
Once your book is published, it will be available in print and eBook format. We will continue to promote your book through a range of marketing campaigns. Learn more about how we market and sell books.

What our authors think
I have been publishing with CRC Press/Taylor and Francis for more than two decades, and I have consistently found their editorial team to be reliable and supportive of my book projects. Their staff possesses an impressive understanding of the publishing industry, and they consistently apply their expertise to ensure the high quality of their publications. This dedication to excellence has established Taylor and Francis as a leading force in the industry.
Writing a book is just one part of the journey, getting it published is almost another project in itself. I chose CRC Press to publish five of my books because I wanted the support of an established publishing house who is familiar with the intricacies of book publishing to be my guide and trusted partner on these journeys. They have helped immensely in getting the book into the right hands, handling the shipping and delivery of the book as well as fine-tuning the content, and ensuring the legal aspects are taken care of. I trust them to help get this content into the world.
Many people think that publishing a book is scary, but our editors have been consistently kind, professional and knowledgeable, making the whole process. What has struck me is the depth of knowledge of the sector, but also the level of trust.
Working with the team at Routledge/Taylor & Francis to publish a custom edition of David Tod’s esteemed work on sport psychology proved eminently satisfactory. The editorial and design work was professional and resulted in a seamless integration of material we introduced to the book. A team that has success communicates well, and lines of communication with the production team were clear and responsive.
