Why submit to Article Collections?

Discover the advantages of contributing to an Article Collection and becoming a Guest Advisor. Learn how to maximize your research impact and visibility.

What is an Article Collection?

An Article Collection is an opportunity for your research to reach the right audience. Bringing together the work of the global research community, Collections provide readers with a central place to find the latest research on emerging and important topics. They have been found to increase the discoverability and visibility of each article, as well as article-level citations.  See below for more information:

  • Article Collections are like traditional special issues, with one key difference: articles are published on a rolling basis, appearing online as soon as they are accepted. Guest Advisors are also not involved in the peer review process.

  • Article Collections feature articles on a trending topic or growing area of interest in the field.

  • Each Collection is headed by a Guest Advisor; they may wish to organize a team of co-Advisors (total team of 1-3 Guest Advisors).

  • All manuscripts submitted to Article Collections will undergo desk assessment and rigorous peer-review as part of our standard editorial process. Guest Advisors are not involved in peer-reviewing manuscripts.

  • Articles are published gold open access, meaning they will be accessible to everyone, which can result in more downloads, higher citations, and increased visibility.

Article Collection guidelines

Every manuscript submitted to an Article Collection will undergo full, independent peer review, in line with Taylor & Francis’ Editorial Policies. You can find more information about our peer review process here

Guest Advisors and co-Guest Advisors have no role in the peer review process unless they are existing members of the journal’s Editorial Board and are already involved in the peer review process as part of their Editorial Board duties.

The Editor-in-Chief/s of the journal have the final decision on every paper submitted to the Collections; manuscripts that do not fit the scope of the journal or meet the standards for peer review may be rejected.

Get to know the role of Guest Advisor

A Guest Advisor leads an Article Collection and can work independently or as part of a team of co-Guest Advisors. Guest Advisors are active in their field of research and are experts on the topic/s of the Article Collection that they lead on.

Key responsibilities:

  1. Define the scope of the Article Collection: Write the description explaining the background and the subtopics. This serves as the call for papers for authors and the introduction for readers.

  2. Identify potential authors who might be interested in submitting to the Collection.

  3. Promote the Collection to colleagues in the field.

Why you should become a Guest Advisor:

  • Shaping the future of research in your area

  • Growing your network and research impact by collaborating with leading and emerging researchers on this topic

  • Each Article Collection has a dedicated webpage where your name and bio will appear

  • Guest Advisors have full commissioning support from our in-house commissioning team; we lead you through each step of the project

  • All articles published in a Collection will benefit from the databases in which the journal is indexed

  • All authors who submit to an Article Collection are eligible for at least a 10% discount on the standard article processing charges

Guest Advisor expectations

The role of the Guest Advisor is to work together with the Journal editors and Taylor & Francis, to promote the reputation, academic success, and visibility of the Article Collection and specifically to:

  • Advise the Editor and Publisher on the aims and scope of the Article Collection.

  • Raise awareness amongst own networks about the call for papers.

  • Help the Editor to identify key researcher groups to solicit content.

  • If necessary, work with the Editor and any co-Guest Advisors in writing an Editorial to frame the Article Collection.

  • Help to promote the Article Collection.

  • Maintain the high ethical standards of the journal and comply with Taylor & Francis’ Editorial Policies.

How to prepare a proposal as a Guest Advisor

Briefly, your responsibilities would be to:

  1. (Optional) Identify one-two co-Guest Advisors to join your team. All Guest Advisors should be active researchers with recent publications in the field relevant to the Article Collection; we require Guest Advisors to have at least three years of research experience after earning their doctorate degree (or equivalent).

  2. Prepare a description of your Article Collection. A Commissioning Editor will provide a proposal form to use that outlines three key sections: an introduction to the topic, why the topic is important, what subtopics or preferred article types will be considered.

  3. Prepare a list of at least 40 potential authors who may wish to contribute to the Collection. You do not need to confirm their participation in advance.

  4. Send the proposal, list, and the Curriculum Vitae (CV) for each Guest Advisor to the Commissioning Editor. The Editor will then facilitate a brief evaluation of the materials with the journal’s Editor-in-Chief/s.

Open access journals and Article Publishing Charges (APCs)

Journals that publish open access require payment of an article publishing charge (APC); this includes manuscripts submitted to an Article Collection. APCs vary between journals and may depend on the article type. APCs may also differ from the standard APC if your institution or research funder has an open access publishing agreement or an open access membership with Taylor & Francis.

If you are interested in launching an Article Collection with one of our open access journals, please visit the APC Cost Finder page to find the APC applicable to your specified journal.
