Research Communication Lab 5: Mastering academic article writing S&T day one

What the event covered

This two-day workshop covers academic writing essentials, article structure, and writing strategies, in the area of Science & Technology. Participants will learn to draft, outline, and review papers, create effective titles and abstracts, and understand article types and their purposes.

Day one covers:

  • Academic writing: style, tone and how to communicate effectively

  • Overview of common article types for the research area and their purpose

  • Breakdown of typical research article (what needs to be included in each section)

  • Other elements of the article (charts and graphs, images, data)

This webinar is part of The Research Communication Lab, a year-long, 11-part program designed to help researchers navigate scholarly publishing and maximize their impact. Open to all, it includes monthly live sessions, pre-recorded content for flexible learning, and covers topics like academic writing, peer review, publishing ethics, research data management, and using social media for visibility.

About the speaker

Jing Zhu is Associate Director, Community Development, China for Taylor & Francis. The team works closely with researchers, editors and partners such as funders, institutions and societies to build publishing capacity, raise visibility and offer training and support for the research community.

She has more than 14 years’ experience in the publishing industry. Prior to joining Taylor & Francis, Jing served as an editor for multiple life and materials science journals and successfully managed and developed journal portfolios at Wiley.
